Dole, 97, represented Kansas in the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1996 and was Senate Majority Leader for three years. A World War II veteran, he also was the Republican Party’s 1996 presidential nominee. His distinguished political career spanned nearly five decades.

Current Kansas Senator Roger Marshall said in a statement “I have not known a better public servant.”
Former Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, who also served in the U.S. Senate, said “Bob Dole is a fighter so I wouldn’t assume anything.”
Stage 4 cancer is the most advanced stage of the illness and is the least likely to be cured or end up in remission
