Pope Francis Death: Missouri, Kansas Political Leaders Respond

The death of Pope Francis on Monday sparked widespread mourning across the globe. Missouri and Kansas elected officials joined the worldwide outpouring of tributes for the pontiff who transformed the Roman Catholic Church.

“We’ve lost a good shepherd, but the Lord will raise up another one. We are all here just for a season. Anybody that was hurting, I think he had this great compassion for. I think many people could relate to him and felt that he cared about them. In particular, the people and culture in society that might be considered on the margins or insignificant. But I think Pope Francis had great respect and care for them.” — Joseph Naumann, Archbishop of Kansas City, Kan.

“Pope Francis, rest in peace. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” – Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo.

“Pope Francis reaffirmed the faith of many far beyond the Catholic Church as he dedicated his life and papacy to speaking to and for the poor and marginalized all over the world. In a young century still in search of great men, his loss is a staggering one.” — Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Pope Francis. During his time leading the world’s Catholics, he emphasized the needs of the poor and the forgotten to people of all faiths. I attended his address to Congress in 2015 where he reminded all listening of the virtues and blessings of our great nation. May the late pope rest in peace with the Lord for whom he served his life.” — Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan.

“Catholics in Kansas and around the world are remembering the life and legacy of Pope Francis following his passing just hours after Easter Sunday. He dedicated his life to the Catholic Church and serving others, and we pray for those mourning his loss.” – Rep. Ron Estes, R-Kan.

“Today, we give thanks to God for Pope Francis and his many years of service to our church. His Jesuit heart reminded us always of our obligation to the impoverished and poor in spirit. I was blessed to meet and speak with him personally last year, and I grieve for his passing. We commend his soul to the Lord and pray for Catholics around the world.” – Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo.
