Hope Finds New Ground: Mother’s Refuge Expands Services for Young Moms

In a quiet corner of Independence, Missouri, across from Harry Truman’s historic home, Mother’s Refuge is transforming the former Higher Ground Boutique Hotel into a beacon of hope for homeless pregnant and parenting young women. The expansion marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to support young mothers in crisis.
“Mother’s Refuge is a maternity home for pregnant and parenting young moms and babies 12-21 years old,” explains Mindy Greaves, who can barely contain her excitement about the project. “Our vision is to restore hope and empower young mothers. We launched our Transitional Living Program in 2022, and only a few years later, we are expanding that program!”

The impact of such programs becomes crystal clear through the eyes of Lindsay, a current resident who arrived at Mother’s Refuge last March. “I honestly didn’t know what I was doing as a mother,” she recalls, cradling her daughter born last April. “But this team of women surrounded me in love and support—not once judging me, but guiding me, cheering me on, and accepting me as their family.”
The new facility, situated at 200 N Delaware, will provide more than just shelter. Executive Director Angel McDonald emphasizes the comprehensive approach: “This project directly addresses the growing demand for safe, stable housing in our community, offering hope and a pathway to self-sufficiency for women and children experiencing the harsh realities of homelessness.”
Each of the 12 apartments will come fully furnished, but the support extends far beyond four walls and furniture. Residents will receive access to education, job training, parenting resources, and mental health services – tools essential for breaking cycles of poverty and building sustainable futures.
For Lindsay, these services have been transformative. “I’m so thankful to Mother’s Refuge for the things they’ve taught me as a parent, for helping me take control of my mental health, and for giving me the tools to break generational cycles,” she shares. Their “generosity gave me and my daughter a place to call home, and the opportunity to be the best mom I can be.”
The groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m. on April 24, will celebrate not just new construction, but new beginnings. As Greaves puts it, with unmistakable joy in her voice, “We are overjoyed to be able to welcome more moms and babies home!”
