Local Recovery Organization Plans Day of Giving as KC Faces Record Homelessness
In a city where more than 2,200 people experience homelessness each night, a local recovery organization is stepping up to make a difference this holiday season.
Healing House KC, a faith-based recovery housing organization, will host its annual “Day of Giving” on December 21, featuring two major initiatives aimed at supporting Kansas City’s vulnerable populations.
The event comes at a critical time, as Kansas City currently holds the highest percentage (95.7%) of chronically homeless individuals living unsheltered among major U.S. cities, surpassing even Los Angeles.
The organization’s Homeless Outreach program will distribute 100 backpacks filled with essential items to individuals experiencing homelessness. First Interstate Bank – Shawnee Branch donated the backpacks, which contain food, winter weather gear, socks, hygiene items, and personalized messages of encouragement.
This Day of Giving is not just about providing material support; it’s about fostering hope and connection within our neighborhood.
“At Healing House, we believe in the power of community and giving back,” said Bobbi Jo Reed, CEO & Founder of Healing House KC. “This Day of Giving is not just about providing material support; it’s about fostering hope and connection within our neighborhood. It’s a reminder that healing is a journey that involves not just receiving help, but also extending a hand to lift others up.”
What sets this initiative apart is the involvement of Healing House’s program participants – individuals who have successfully navigated their own recovery journeys and are now giving back to the community. Their participation exemplifies the organization’s mission of restoring lives through faith, hope, and service to others.
The day’s activities will also include a Community Christmas Care Day, featuring Santa Claus and providing neighborhood children with toys and winter clothing. This component ensures that local families can participate in the holiday spirit despite economic challenges.
As Kansas City continues to grapple with increasing homelessness, initiatives like the Day of Giving represent crucial community-based responses to the crisis.
