National Easter Egg unveiled by First Lady Melania Trump

Did you know the United States actually has a national Easter Egg? It does and the 42nd annual commemorative egg designed for First Lady Melania Trump was unveiled Wednesday in advance of the 2019 White House Easter Egg Roll.

It will be presented to Mrs. Trump on Monday, April 22 at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll by the American Egg Board, on behalf of America’s egg farmers.

It will be the 141st version of the egg roll that began in 1878 under the Administration of President Rutherford B. Hayes.

The design for this year’s egg was inspired by submissions from children of America’s egg farmers across the country.

America’s egg farmers will provide a record-breaking 74,000 eggs for Monday’s event, which will be used for the Egg Roll, egg decorating, and EggPops, according to a press release.

The 141st annual event will be held on the White House’s South Lawn with more than 30,000 families expected to attend.

While 1878 is the official year the egg roll began, historians say informal festivities began with egg-rolling parties under President Abraham Lincoln.

The egg roll became so popular that President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill that banned the rolling of eggs on Capitol grounds, citing landscape concerns.

The egg roll was paused due to World War I and World War II.

From 1917 to 1920 and from 1943 to 1945 the egg roll tradition took a back seat to the more pressing issues of peace. Although in 1917 the roll happened but it was forced to the U.S. Capitol and the National Zoo.

President Harding brought the egg roll back to the White House in 1921, but it got canceled again starting in 1942 because of World War II.

This year’s official White House Easter Egg Roll commemorative eggs will be available to the general public.
