Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder arrested in Pennsylvania
In a dramatic development on Monday afternoon, police apprehended the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The arrest ends a five-day manhunt that spanned multiple states. Luigi Mangione, 26, was taken into custody at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where officers found him carrying a weapon matching the one used in last week’s assassination.
The killing occurred at 6:45 a.m. last Wednesday when Thompson was gunned down on a Manhattan street in what police described as a premeditated attack. Surveillance footage showed the killer waiting for Thompson before fleeing on foot and then by bicycle into Central Park.
The breakthrough in the case, came after an unnamed person at McDonalds notified police that the a person matching photos was in the restaurant.
An earlier break in the case, which made international headlines, came when police obtained photos and videos from surveillance cameras, including a New York taxi, as well as street cameras and the hostel where the subject allegedly stayed.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed in a press conference Mangione’s arrest on weapons charges, with more charges related to Thompson’s murder expected this afternoon. The suspect was discovered attempting to use a fake New Jersey ID in Altoona, located in central Pennsylvania and approximately 235 miles from the crime scene.
The murder has prompted major corporations to reassess their executive security measures, which come at a time with heightened threats stemming from pro-Palestiinian activists around the country. Thompson, known for controversially guiding UnitedHealthcare through expansion and rate increases, was murdered at dawn on a busy Manhattan street lined with top hotels.
Investigators continue examining Thompson’s business contacts, corporate decisions, and personal connections that may provide clues as to a motive.
